On April 6, 2008, SOY members went on a field trip to the location of the new Vedic temple near House Springs, MO. The group included Gretchen Karros, Linda Swaty, Bruce Roger, Valerie White, Ed Swindle, Lakshmi, Karen Proffitt and Kate Walsh in the picture above. Also in attendance was Kathy Hanewinkel.

Finding an appropriate yoga class in a convenient location became the quest of many during the nationwide yoga boom that reached Saint Louis in the mid 1990’s. As enthusiasm for yoga increased here, a small group of yoginis started visualizing an organization that would, among other things, put students in touch with the many teachers, studios, and centers operating in the bi-state area.

Informal monthly meetings began in the spring of 2004 and soon a dedicated group of teachers and students emerged to become the Founding Board of Directors. By-laws were drawn up and the group incorporated on April 14, 2005 as The Spirit of Yoga ~ Saint Louis [SOY].

By late summer, much of the framework was in place and recruitment for general membership began.

Spirit of Yoga ~ Saint Louis is a membership organization of yoga teachers, students and studios in the Saint Louis metropolitan area dedicated to serving as a yoga information network and as a catalyst for shared community initiatives.

Our vision is an organization that provides a forum to honor the many levels, paths, traditions and styles of yoga in the Saint Louis area; and to use the common bonds and collective power of its members to influence the greater community consciousness.
